Yachting in the North and Baltic Seas offers an extreme form of recreation due to severe conditions such as high tides, strong winds, complex bottom topography, and undercurrents. The yachting season is short, and the weather is extremely changeable. There is also high shipping traffic in the straits. However, yachting in northern Europe is a way of life, and countries here have rich maritime traditions. There are numerous yacht clubs, and tens of thousands of yachts, boats, and vessels of all sizes ply these waters. The most famous sailing regattas and festivals take place here. Cowes, located on the English Isle of Wight in the English Channel, is considered the birthplace of yachting. We provide a brief guide to the regions for yachting in the North and Baltic Seas with bases for yacht charter.
Yachting in the UK
Yachting on the UK’s South West Coast offers bases for yacht charter at Port Humble, Southampton, and Port Solent. However, yachting in the UK is recommended only for experienced yachtsmen due to the high level of difficulty. Tidal waters, with amplitudes of up to 10 meters, create challenges, as does the difficult bottom topography, with underwater rocks and sharp drops in depth, a rocky coastline, and strong currents. With headwinds, there can be ripples and standing waves. Sandbars near some harbors are dangerous during bad weather. Despite these challenges, infrastructure is well-developed, with comfortable marinas and many equipped berths, and good, protected anchorages. The climate is temperate maritime, characterized by high humidity and influenced by the warm current of the Gulf Stream. In summer, the average air temperature is +22 degrees Celsius, and the water temperature warms up to +24 degrees Celsius. The most favorable time for yachting is from June to early September, but the weather conditions are extremely changeable. In the summer, a northwesterly wind of 10-25 knots prevails, blowing from the northern part of the Atlantic Ocean, but is characterized by extreme inconstancy, with a high probability of rain and fog.
